16 Important Things To Consider When Organising Wedding Food

Food is an important aspect of your wedding day. Below are just some of the key things to consider when it comes to organising food and keeping your guests fed.

Does the venue provide catering?

When choosing a venue, one of the most important things to look into is if they provide catering. If so, is it the type of catering that you want? The best wedding venues will be able to offer multiple food packages. These are typically included within the price of the venue.

Can I hire my own catering?

If a venue does not provide catering or does not provide the type of food you’d like at your venue, you should consider whether the venue allows you to hire outside caterers. Some venues that provide their own catering do not allow you to outsource other caterers. All in all, it’s important that you are able to choose the right catering company to suit your preferences.

Sit down meal or buffet?

During a ‘sit down’ meal, food is served to the guests at their tables. A buffet meal meanwhile requires guests to get up and plate their own food. Buffet meals are less formal and generally cheaper because you do not have to pay for waiting staff.

How many guests will be eating?

It’s important to work out exactly how many people will be eating at your wedding so that you can provide the right amount of food. This is particularly important when choosing a sit down meal, however it also matters when choosing a buffet meal - provide too low an estimate and there may be not enough food to go around, while too high an estimate could result in a lot of wasted food.

Will your vendors get food?

It is courteous to provide vendors like photographers, wedding planners and waiting staff with food. Don’t let your vendors go hungry!

Any special dietary requirements?

A good catering team will be able to accommodate any special dietary requirements, however they will often need to be warned in advance. Consider whether any of your guests have food allergies/intolerances, if they have religious dietary requirements or if they are vegan.

Will there be kids coming?

If there are young kids coming, you may want to arrange separate food for them. On top of kids meals, you may want to consider some snacks to enjoy throughout the day. This could include sweet cones, a chocolate fountain or even an ice cream van.

Will you be eating outside?

Outdoor weddings are becoming increasingly more popular. However, you may want to be wary of serving food outdoors. Food can easily attract flies or go off if left in the sun, and can be equally spoiled by rain or wind. Allowing guests to eat under a marquee could be a solution to this.

What type of cake will you order?

Of course, you can’t forget the cake! While some cakes are purely ceremonial, most couples prefer to choose cakes that guests can actually eat. On top of choosing the right cake design, you should consider the cake ingredients. A lot of people do not like the traditional fruit cake filling, and this has led more couples to choose victoria sponge fillings or chocolate cakes.

Don’t forget to book a Food Tasting

Before finalising your menu, it's essential to schedule a food tasting with your chosen caterer. This allows you to sample the dishes and ensure they meet your expectations in terms of taste and presentation.

Will you need Late-Night Snacks?

If your wedding celebration will continue late into the night, offering late-night snacks can be a thoughtful gesture. This could include a mini-burger station, a nacho bar, or even a popcorn cart to keep guests fueled and satisfied.

The HK Photo Company

Decorative Food Displays, how can you incorporate visually appealing food displays?

Consider incorporating visually appealing food displays as part of your wedding decor. This could involve a beautifully arranged cheese and charcuterie board, a colorful fruit display, or an extravagant dessert table that doubles as a centerpiece.

Cultural and Regional Cuisine, will you include traditional dishes or flavors?

If you have a specific cultural background or want to pay homage to a certain region, consider incorporating traditional dishes or flavors into your menu. This adds a personal touch and can be a great way to celebrate your heritage.

Go Sustainable and Local Sourcing were possible!

If sustainability is important to you, inquire about the catering company's approach to sourcing ingredients. Opting for locally sourced, organic, or seasonal produce can reduce the carbon footprint of your wedding and support local businesses.

Wow Your Guests with Food Presentation

Don't underestimate the power of presentation. Work with your caterer to create visually stunning dishes that are not only delicious but also look appealing on the plate. Artful presentation can enhance the overall dining experience for your guests.

Have you thought about Foody Favors?

Consider providing edible wedding favors that guests can take home. This could be small jars of homemade jam, personalized cookies, or mini bottles of locally produced olive oil. Edible favors are not only appreciated but also double as a meaningful souvenir.

Remember, every wedding is unique, and the food choices should reflect your personal preferences and style. By considering these additional points, you'll be well on your way to creating a memorable dining experience for you and your guests on your special day.

The Wedding Day Food Mistakes You Can't Afford To Make

September 8, 2021 Hannah Lomas

It's no exaggeration to say that the food is one of the biggest elements of your wedding day. This sounds ridiculous, given that it's a celebration of love and two people coming together. Regardless, many guests are looking forward to the food, and it's one of the key things that stick in people's minds when they remember your big day.

As such, you can't afford to make mistakes when planning your wedding food. A few errors are far too common, but by learning what they are, you can ensure they don't happen on your wedding day.

Sander Dalhuisen

Sander Dalhuisen

No snacking food

Most wedding days follow a similar schedule. You have the ceremony in the late morning before heading to the reception. In terms of timing, you get to the reception in the early afternoon but probably won't eat until around 2 or 3 pm. This seems to be the standard across the board, but it means your guests go from breakfast to 3 pm without eating.

Consequently, you need to provide them with some snacking food to keep them satisfied before the main meal. Consider getting some canapés made, placing them around the reception room for people to munch on while the meal is cooked. If you're wondering what are canapés, they're small bites for people to eat. Effectively, they're the ultimate snack as they look fancy, taste great, but don't fill your guests up too much.

Snacks before the meal are essential, but you also need some snacks after the meal. An hour or so after the meal is cleared away and finished, your guests can start feeling peckish again. Bear in mind that they will stay at the reception until the late hours of the evening, so you need some evening snacks for the hungry guests. This can include some finger food for people to pick at and eat, possibly even small bites like sliders or mini sandwiches. The bottom line is, you can't make the mistake of not having any snacks and creating hungry guests!

No menu choices

The next mistake is one you really can't afford to make as it might prevent people from attending your wedding. When deciding on the menu, you have to include different choices for each course. Don't force people to have one thing with each course, as you have no idea if they will like it or not.

Ideally, you need to provide three options for every stage of the meal. There should also be a vegetarian or vegan option, catering to people's dietary requirements. By having choices, it basically means your guests can create their own meal based on their preferences. Therefore, they should enjoy what they eat and remember a delightful time, rather than being forced to eat things they might not like.

There may only be two mistakes to worry about, but they are big ones. Hungry guests will become agitated and might start having a bad time at your wedding. Likewise, a menu with no choices will not be looked at fondly by guests, further increasing the chances of people not enjoying themselves. Keep your guests well-fed with a choice of snacks, and be sure there are options on the menu for everyone to select.

Boho & Vintage Cheshire Cocktails 20191129_132010.jpg

Tequila Sunrise!

Firstly, Tequila Sunrise. Created in Phoenix, Arizona in the 1930's. The cocktail is named as it is supposed to resemble a sunrise looking into the glass.

How to make the above cocktail, you will need the following ingredients/equipment:

Tequila (50ml)
Grenadine (up to 25ml)
Topped with Orange Juice
Ice Cubes
Orange Slice
High Ball Glass (or something similar from your cupboard)
Bar Spoon or Tea Spoon
2 x straws
Cocktail Pourers
Cocktail Shaker
Drink Strainer/Sieve

This is a short and enjoyable too! It is also very easy to make! Lets "Mix it Up" and make it:

To make this cocktail, you will need to pour the Tequila (50ml) and the Orange Juice into the cocktail shaker, with a few ice cubes, (roughly 3/4 of the way up inside of the cocktail glass).

Then shake the cocktail 10/15 times over your shoulder, so that it has mixed properly. Pour the drink into your chosen glass, (with some ice cubes), by straining the drink.

Now pour the Grenadine (25ml) into the drink. Then give the drink a stir with the spoon, slowly to get the correct effect.

Finally, garnish with a slice of orange on the top of the glass.

Relax, sit back and enjoy the drink!

Boho & Vintage Cheshire Cocktails 20200522_214757.jpg

Moscow Mule Cocktail.

The combination of Smirnoff Vodka and Ginger Ale invented in Los Angeles, California in the 1940's a businessman called John Martin had the purchasing rights of the Smirnoff vodka brand and he realised that the Americans were not really into vodka.

Another man called Jack Morgan, who owned a British pub in Los Angeles called the Cock 'n' Bull was apparently struggling to shift his stock of Ginger Ale and his girlfriend was said to have owned a copper factory, so that's how the drink ended up in a copper mug. If you have a copper mug, rather than using a glass at home, the copper mug makes the drink cold.

For this cocktail recipe, you will need the following ingredients/equipment:

50ml Vodka
Ginger Ale
Ice Cubes
Slice of lime (for the garnish)
Copper Mug or Tumbler Glass (or something similar in your cupboard)
Cocktail Pourer
Knife/Chopping Board
Cocktail Shaker or Jam Jar (with a lid)
2 x straw (optional)

To make this cocktail, you will need to follow these simple steps.

This is a fairly straightforward cocktail to make but also very easy to drink too.

Firstly, place a few ice cubes in the glass/copper mug, them pour 50ml Smirnoff Vodka into the glass.

To finish the drink, top up with ginger ale. For the garnish, cut a lime slice and place on the edge of the glass.

Serve with a couple of straws, if you would like too.

Kick yourself back, relax and enjoy when making your cocktails.

Boho & Vintage Cheshire Cocktails 20200501_190456.jpg

Screwdriver Cocktail!

Lastly, the Screwdriver cocktail. The origin of this drink from America when the oil workers used to secretly sneak in vodka and tip this in their glass of morning orange juice while working on the job. As they did not have a clean spoon to mix the drink, they used a screwdriver instead! Hence the name.

For this cocktail recipe, you will need the following ingredients/equipment:

50ml Vodka
Orange Juice
Ice Cubes
Slice of orange (for the garnish)
Strainer
High Ball Glass (or something similar in your cupboard)
Knife/Chopping Board
Cocktail Shaker
Cocktail Pourer
2 x sip straws (optional)

To make this cocktail, you will need to follow these simple steps.

This is a fairly straightforward cocktail to make but also very easy to drink too.

Pour 50ml Vodka and orange juice into a cocktail shaker along with a few ice cubes about a third of the way up, inside the cocktail shaker.

Shake the cocktail 10/15 times over your shoulder, until properly mixed. Place a few ice cubes into the glass, then pour the drink into the glass by straining it.

For the garnish, cut a (quarter) of an orange slice and place on the edge of the glass. Serve with a couple of straws, if you would like too.

Relax and enjoy!
