Seasonal wedding planning - it can be tricky to know which time of year will best suit your big day. Whether you’re a hot weather fanatic who thrives in the summer months, or you prefer to wrap up warm and toasty while it’s cold outside in winter, here are some key things to consider before taking the plunge and choosing the right season for your wedding. 

What do YOU prefer?

Consider your own personal preferences before anyone else. After all, it’s yourself and your partner that matters most on this momentous day for you both! 

Think about what time of year you feel most comfortable in terms of temperature and surroundings. Do you hate cold weather and having to be out in it? If so, an outdoor winter wedding isn’t a good idea, but a cosy winter lodge with an open fire could be the perfect venue.

If you’re worried about the possibility of rain dampening your big day, then we suggest opting for a summer wedding as you’re less likely to be faced with bad weather. 

Or maybe you feel a bit too hot and bothered in summer? Consider planning your wedding for a cooler month, such as the end of spring or start of autumn.

What’s your desired colour palette? 

Have a particular colour theme in mind? Think about how this might work with the typical weather conditions and seasonal colours you might have around you, especially if your wedding is outdoors.

For example, shades of rust, burgundy, deep purple and chocolate brown can work really well against autumn leaves and early sunsets. Whereas pastel shades look best in spring and summer months. Do you have a particular dress, suit, hair or makeup style in mind? Will these work well with the weather conditions you might face at this time of year?

Be sure to take care of your skin for those perfect glowing photos, whatever the weather! SPF will keep your skin radiant throughout summer and lip balm and moisturiser will protect you from harsh winter weather conditions that can dry out your skin.

What will the lighting be like?

Think about the desired look of your venue and how you want this to come across in your wedding pictures. Is your venue quite open with large windows ready to boast plenty of light? Or are you looking for a more moody and glamorous effect so that you can decorate tables with candles and have dimmer lighting?

If you’re wanting sunkissed photos, a summer wedding at a venue with plenty of open space will do just the trick. But if you’re looking for dramatic sunsets or a softer glow, perhaps with some rain for added effect, a winter wedding in a cosy and intimate venue might be a better option.

Do your research and ask photographers to show you examples of their work that they have taken in similar lighting conditions as what you are after. Be sure to book your photographer accordingly, as a photographer who has techniques that work well in daylight might not work as well at dusk. 

Also, make sure to visit your venue ahead of the big day, preferably in the same weather conditions as you hope to have your wedding in, so you can see whether the venue holds up well all things considered - this way, you can ensure that it won’t be too hot or too cold, which could result in an unpleasant experience.

What’s your budget?

Take a look at your list of suppliers and selection of potential venues. Do they have peak periods throughout the year? Are they likely to be busier during warmer or colder times of year due to their style and aesthetic? 

Typically, there’s often a much higher demand for summer weddings due to the weather being more pleasant and there being a lot more variety available, in terms of outdoor or indoor options. Be sure to book your venue and suppliers well in advance if you’re planning to have your wedding during a busy season as this can help to reduce costs.

Consider bank holidays and whether these dates will hike up the price due to higher demand. However, a bank holiday can also work in your favour as many of your guests won’t have to be at work the following morning.

You might find that venues are cheaper in low seasons such as autumn and winter, so, if you’re not too fussy about the weather, you might get a better deal and be able to stretch your budget even further. Shopping around is key! Ask suppliers whether their quotes change throughout the year so you can price up a variety of options.

How many guests do you have?

If you want a really big turn out at your wedding, it’s probably best to avoid booking your big day in the heat of summer as many of your guests are likely to be taking their families on holiday during this time. Close to Christmas might be a difficult time to plan for too, as guests might be trying to save their cash after spending money on gifts. 

If you’re only wanting close friends and family at your wedding, try asking them if they have any big commitments coming up that could prevent them from attending. One surefire way to stop your guests from bailing is to invite them well in advance so they have the opportunity to arrange time off from work and childcare if needed.

Is there anything that you could theme your big day around?

Consider meaningful dates that have some significance to you and your partner and see whether this would make your wedding extra special. 

Could you take advantage of overlapping events? For example, bonfire night could make for some spectacular photos with fireworks in the background. You could even give your guests some sparklers for that extra touch of magic.

Do remember that the day after bonfire night tends to be a little foggy, so perhaps avoid booking this date as your wedding photos might look a little washed out! 

What are the plans for after your wedding?

Usually, this element will be at the back of your mind, but it’s important to think about once the big day is over. Where do you go from there?

Where do you plan on honeymooning? Is it somewhere that is best visited at a certain time of year? Not everyone has their honeymoon straight after their wedding, but if you’re planning to get whisked away right after your big day, this is definitely something to consider. 

Think about seasonal flowers.

Think about the flowers you’d like in your bouquets and buttonholes, will they be readily available at this time of year or will you be struggling to find them?

Don’t forget about your food and drink options.

Think about your menu and how you can complement it with the season. For example, in winter your guests will be expecting more hearty foods like stews, soups and roast dinners. Whereas in summer, guests will want lighter options like salads that won’t leave them feeling as full. You can apply this theory to your drinks options too! Refreshing cocktails for summer or opt for mulled wine in winter months.

Any important details to add?

There are many small details that can make your big day that extra bit special. However, they might not always be as easy to find at some times of year than others. 

Longer summer days are usually much hotter and exhausting than shorter ones, make sure your venue has somewhere for your guests to shelter from the sun and refreshments at the ready throughout the day for your guests to cool themselves down with.

If it’s cold, try incorporating blankets and warm drinks such as mulled wine/cider into your wedding. It will add an extra element of cosiness and encourage guests to come together.

Finding the Perfect Dress for a Warm-weather Wedding

Summer in the UK keeps getting longer and warmer as the number of heatwaves and warm spells continue to rise. It’s important that you consider this when planning what to wear on your big day. 

From wedding dresses to details, hairstyles to handbag accessories, and everything in between, here’s what you should do to prepare ahead for your big day if you’re expecting it to be a warm one! 

Choose the right dress

It’s your wedding day, so of course you want to look and feel incredible with a beautiful dress that’s as unique as you are. But what if we told you that you could do all that and still not have to compromise on comfort? 

A wedding dress doesn’t have to be big and embellished to look beautiful - you can look equally as stunning in something sleek and sophisticated like a loose-flowing chiffon or silk dress with spaghetti straps. Or why not lose the straps all together and let the neckline do the talking? A plunging neckline or sweetheart shaped bustier will open up the chest area and allow for more airflow and less chance of stuffiness.

If you’re not a fan of a low neckline and prefer to be more covered up, then consider other lightweight materials such as linen and crepe. You can even get away with lace detailing as long as it’s on the lighter side.

Most of all, you’ll want a material that is soft and free-flowing - anything that can easily move with a gentle breeze should help you to stay cool and comfortable.

It’s important to think about how much you’ll be moving around too, as certain weddings will involve a lot more activity than others. For example, will you be having a small wedding with just a few close friends and family at a local venue? Or will you be having a large outdoor wedding with hundreds of guests to greet, live music and dancing? If your wedding sounds like the latter, it might be a good idea to test-run your wedding dress to see if it’s restrictive or not. The more energy you’re having to use to get around your venue in your dress, the more likely you will become hot and flustered easily.   

Prepare for a change of weather

It might sound obvious, but think about the location of your wedding. Is your big day going to be spent mainly indoors or outdoors? If you’re planning on being outside for most of the day, even if it’s forecast to be a heatwave, make sure you have all bases covered…just in case! 

Though the day may start off warm, as we know by now, weather in the UK can change at the drop of a hat. If you’re not prepared, you may be left feeling cold and uncomfortable - nobody wants that on their wedding day! 

Ask your bridal boutique about complementing accessories such as boleros, lace inserts and cardigans that can be used to keep you that bit warmer if the weather takes a turn for the worst. Most dress-fitters will have suggestions for this and will be on hand to help you pick something practical that still suits the style you have chosen.

Likewise, if the weather begins to get even hotter, picking a dress that can be easily customised with the help of your dress fitter is always a clever option. Some dress designs can be quickly altered to release some of the fabric, such as the train, to give you more space to move and leave you with an elegant, lightweight dress for the reception that’s perfect for dancing the night away in! 

Explain to your bridal boutique that you want to be able to move freely after your wedding ceremony. If you can afford it, why not go for a second wedding dress for your reception? It’ll wow your guests and leave you feeling much fresher than if you were to wear a heavy dress all day in the hot sunshine.

Think about the details

There’s nothing worse than feeling hot and uncomfortable during your big day - you’ll want to try and stay as cool and calm as possible, as there will be many emotions already wreaking havoc on your body’s temperature. It’s only natural to get a bit clammy when you’re nervous! 

Wear breathable cotton underwear to help minimise sweating. You can even ditch the bra if you’re feeling confident enough and your dress is supportive - the less layers the better when it comes to hot-weather weddings! 

Have a trial run of your wedding makeup and try to wear it all day - preferably on a hot day if you can. This will give you an idea of how the products may react to the elements. You’ll want a lightweight foundation that doesn’t make your face feel heavy or cakey, as this will only make you feel hotter. Trial a range of foundations with your makeup artist and let them know which one feels best on your skin, they should be able to provide you with a finishing powder that will help to keep any shine at bay and leave your makeup looking flawless from start to finish. 

Consider wearing your hair in an updo to help prevent your neck from sweating. If you have your heart set on having your hair down for your wedding day, be sure to bring along some cooling wet wipes and a handheld fan to keep your hair from sticking to your neck. Take regular bathroom breaks to cool down and have your bridesmaids check the back of your hair to make sure it’s still looking fabulous. 

Quick tips

Here are some additional tips for staying cool at your wedding:

• Stay hydrated - assign one of your bridesmaids to keep a bottle/glass of water on hand for you. This will help regulate your body temperature.

• Remember to wear sunscreen - you don’t want to spend your honeymoon with heat stroke and sunburn! Ask a family member to help apply it to the back of your neck, shoulders and anywhere that is hard to reach. This is particularly important for anyone wearing a backless dress.

• Make a ‘keep cool’ bag and have your bridesmaids look after it for you. We recommend a deodorant or body spray, some wet wipes and tissues, hair bobbles, cooling strips, sunglasses and a fan.

• Worried about chafing? Nude-coloured cycle shorts will mean that your thighs won’t rub together and you’ll be able to move much more freely without having to pay for it in the morning!

• Why not consider having a lightweight evening outfit to change into, such as shorts and a t- shirt or a floaty summer dress? You can have fun with this by embellishing the back with your new surname or the date of your wedding. You could even coordinate with your bridesmaids to keep the theme going!

Our top tips on how to include your colour scheme on your wedding day!

• Choose a signature drink or cocktail to serve to your guests/

• Include the colour in your invitations, this sets the theme for your whole wedding and gives your guests a hint of what to expect

• Use uplighting in your chosen wedding colour palette. The lights could be light up letters, neon signs are a huge favourite (and are pretty damn cool), on your dance floor or use uplighting in your wedding colour palette against the walls, backdrops or drapes. Most DJ’s have uplighting so tell your DJ your wedding colours.

• Use Napkins or runners on the tables of your chosen wedding colour scheme.

• Run the colour throughout your venue dressing; from your flowers, chair decor, centrepieces, balloons and backdrops.

• Choose wedding favors for your guests that match your wedding colour palette.

With so many colours to choose from it’s hard to decide how many you should pick to get just the right balance. You don’t want to go over the top or also be too bland. It is recommended that three to five colours are sufficient to choose the perfect blend of colours for a wedding. Depending on the style you want to go for less can be more by choosing three colours which can include your accents such as hints of metallics such as golds. Unless you having a rainbow themes wedding (which we love!) having more than 5 colours isn’t recommended to avoid a disjointed or messy look/design.

A Colour-popping Festival Vibe Summer Wedding at Whitely Grange Farm, Shropshire

When Paul from PK Wedding Photography sent us images of one of his favourite summer weddings we couldn’t resist sharing the wedding of Rosie and Alex. They got married at Whitley Grange Farm in Shropshire in August 2019. The colour-popping wedding was truly beautiful in every sense. With the ceremony set outdoors oozing festival vibes against the stunning Shropshire landscape, guests relaxed on hay bails throughout the ceremony surrounded by flowers, buntin and ribbons in every colour of the rainbow hanging from trees. The setting was truly a bohemian bride or groom’s dream! With their mutual love of music and festivals their guests were serenaded with live music and a fun-filled party in a huge tipi marque.
